AXEL WITSEL ON BELGIUM’S WORLD CUP AND EURO 2016 APPEARANCES

Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel reflects on Belgium’s appearance in the World Cup, topping FIFA rankings and the Euro 2016:

FIFA Rankings

“We were obviously all very pleased to reach the top of the FIFA rankings. It shows how hard we worked and we’ve had good results but it doesn’t actually mean anything  yet. We haven’t won the World Cup or the European championship. So there is still a lot to do”.

Enjoy football

“I think the most important thing when you are young is to enjoy playing football. Then you have to adapt physically and technically. Its important to learn and work hard at improving your game in order to become the best”.

Standard Liege

“I am where I am today because of the training I received at Standard Liege. They have a great youth system”.

World Cup 2014 – Euro 2016

“I think we could have actually done better. However it was the first World Cup tournament for the majority of our players. When you go to a tournament the aim is to win. It’s true that there’s a lot of expectation of us, but the most important thing is to do the same as what we did at the last World Cup: Take one game at a time in order to go as far as possible in the tournament”.
