Marco Reus earns Borussia Dortmund victory at Werder Bremen in first game under Edin Terzic

Marco Reus missed a penalty but scored the rebound to earn Borussia Dortmund a 2-1 victory at Werder Bremen in their first game under the stewardship of Edin Terzic.

Werder Bremen 1-2 Borussia Dortmund
Goals: 0-1
Guerreiro (12′), 1-1 Möhwald (28′), 1-2 Reus (78′)

Youssoufa Moukoko made his first start in the Bundesliga and was inches away from his first goal in the top-flight just four minutes in. The 16-year-old stretched to poke home Gio Reyna‘s pass across goal, but just couldn’t make contact. It wasn’t long until the first goal of the Edin Terzic era was scored, however. Raphael Guerreiro was in the right place to put home the rebound after Jadon Sancho‘s shot was saved in front of goal. Dortmund were on top, but a mistake at the back helped the home side get level. Manuel Akanji‘s heavy touch handed Bremen possession and moments later, Maximilian Eggestein‘s lay-off was smashed home by Kevin Möhwald. Bremen almost gifted the lead back to Dortmund after the half-hour mark with a mistake of their own as Christian Groß diverted Jude Bellingham‘s cross onto his own post. Akanji had the chance to redeem himself before the break on the end of Reus’ free-kick, but Jiri Pavlenka produced a superb reflex save before Roman Bürki tipped a curler from Ludwig Augustinsson wide at the other end to keep the score level into the break.

Moukoko had another chance to create Bundesliga history early in the second half but sliced his effort wide at full-stretch in his attempt to reach a cut-back from Reus at the back post. Sancho had the ball in the Bremen net before the hour-mark but what would have been his first goal of the season was ruled out for offside. Dortmund dominated possession through the second half and always looked the most likely to take the lead. Reus met Mateu Morey‘s cross to the near post with a good header but Pavlenka matched it with an even better save with 15 minutes to play. And it was the captain who put his side back in front, but not without more drama. After Akanji was brought down in the Bremen box by Pavlenka, Reus stepped up for the spot-kick which he saw saved by the Werder No.1. The Germany international was alive to it, though, and smashed home the rebound. In the end, it was enough to earn Dortmund their first win in their last three Bundesliga outings.
