Jadon Sancho sparkles and Marco Reus makes comeback as Borussia Dortmund beat Duisburg in DFB Cup

Jadon Sancho scored one and created another for returning captain Marco Reus, who made his competitive comeback from injury as Borussia Dortmund eased into the second round of the DFB Cup with a 5-0 thrashing of Duisburg on Monday.

Dortmund were very much the favourites going into this match away to their third-tier opponents, and they wasted little time in living up to that billing. Early half-chances came and went before Axel Witsel‘s cross was handled inside the home team’s penalty area, allowing Sancho to step up and score his first goal in the competition from the penalty spot. It remained one-way traffic after that, and BVB doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark through Jude Bellingham, the English teenager finishing calmly on his competitive debut following a lovely back-heel by Thorgan Hazard. The Belgium international added his own name to the scoresheet with a superb free-kick shortly before the interval, after Dominic Volkmer was sent off for hauling down Erling Haaland as last man.

Lucien Favre’s side made sure to dispel any hopes of an unlikely Duisburg fightback early in the second half as they kept turning the screw. Reyna scored his second senior goal for Dortmund with a free-kick, albeit via a deflection off Witsel, to put the outcome beyond Duisburg’s reach. There was still more to come from BVB, however, as Reus came off the bench to make his comeback from injury, seven months after sustaining a groin injury, and he marked the occasion with a smart finish within seconds of taking to the pitch, coolly slotting in from Sancho’s pass. Dortmund eased off after that, their place in the second round draw on 18 October never in doubt.
