AXEL AND ST. PETERSBURG REACH ZENITH

One point was enough for Zenit against Ufa to be mathematically crowned champions for 2014/15; their third time in the last five years.

Biggest chance to seal the title came early through Hulk at the 12′ minute, who after getting passed Yurchenko, saw his shot at an empty post intercepted by Ufa’s defender.

Ufa was giving too many easy fouls around their box and as third time is the charm, Hulk opened the score with a driving shot from 23m out, after half an hour of game-play; Danny tried to take advantage of the momentum but failed to double the lead a minute later with Ufa’s keeper keeping it down to 0-1 for half-time.

A more balanced second half found Ufa reaching Lodygin and that pressure came to fruition with Handzic’s header bringing things level 1-1, three minutes before the finale.

Final whistle found the city of St. Petersburg celebrating the title two match-days before the season’s end, with Axel and Villas Boas winning their first title in Russia.
