Axel Witsel: Belgium have the quality players needed for Euro 2016

Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel has said his team have the players to justify their world No. 1 ranking at Euro 2016.

The Red Devils rose to top spot in the FIFA world ranking for the first time in their history in November, and have been tipped as potential winners of the tournament in France.

They will face Italy, Republic of Ireland and Sweden in Group E in June and Witsel, 27, is confident that they can improve on their quarter-final place at the 2014 World Cup.

“It’s clear that at the moment we have in Belgium a generation with a lot of talent and some very big players,” the Zenit St Petersburg central midfieldertold RTBF.

“With this team, we can go very far at the Euros. All of Belgium — all of our supporters — expect us to win all our matches easily. But we have our feet on the ground.

“We’re going to play the Euros like the World Cup by taking the matches one after the other. We’re going to try and go as far as possible, because we know that we have the players and the quality to do it.”

Witsel, who said a win for Belgium would be “magnificent,” saw his hopes of European glory at club level ended this week when Zenit were knocked out of the Champions League by his former team Benfica.
